Topley ruled out of T20 world cup with ankle injury

England pace bowler Reece Topley has been ruled out of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia because of ligament damage to his left ankle. Tymal Mills, one of the travelling reserves, will replace the Surrey seamer in the squad. In the mean time, Lancashire's left-arm seamer Luke Wood will join the set-up as a travelling reserves.

While participating in fielding drills before England's warm-up game against Pakistan in Brisbane, Topley had "moved his lower leg". In this way, he went through scans which revealed the injury. The speed bowler, who has struggled through numerous injuries before, has been one of England's better bowlers in the more shoter forms this year, having taken 16 wickets at an average of 28 and at an economy rate of 7.8 in T20Is.

Mills, Topley's replacement, has picked up 198 wickets in his T20 career. He also had an impressive run in the T20 World Cup in the UAE last year, bagging seven wickets at an average of just over 15.

England will play their opening Super 12 game on Saturday against Afghanistan in Perth.
